This plugin allows full control of user permalinks allowing you to shift both the author base the number of URLs and the author slug payment to the username of the author.
You can set the author base globally or you can set it to be user-specific based on role.

Activate the plugin through 'Plugins in WordPress.
Go to Users > Your Profile or Users > All Users > username and edit the author slug..
