The Software People's Featured Categories plugin allows you to add featured categories with images to your blog's website.
Add Featured Categories to posts and pages by using inside your text or evaluated from within your theme.
After installation, refer to TSP Featured Categories settings page for more detailed instructions on setting up your shortcodes..
Featured Categories widgets can be added to the bar by visiting Appearance > Widgets and dragging TSP Featured Categories widget to your sidebar menu..
Adjust Sliding Gallery settings, if necessary, by visiting Plugins > Editor, Select TSP Featured Categories and edit the tsp-featured-categories css and js gallery-scripts js files.
However if the author does not store the image under the meta key thumbnail id you will never be able to display the images for your categories...
If your preferred plugin has 'Categories section for items and it also allows you to add category details there is good chance its supported..
Click on the category, in the browser you will see. taxonomy= XXX where XXX is the category taxonomy you can use..
