By default WordPress compresses images on the fly when you add a compression plugin like EWWW and that adds an extra latency to each image upload along with increased CPU usage.
The Bronze plan offers plenty of optimizations for most sites up to 15 000 images a year the Gold plan is more suited to photo sharing sites or blogs and the Silver plan sits right in between..
Of course if you run a very powerful server like mine with 24 threads and 48GB of RAM running under nginx and PHP 7.2 through Plesk Onyx with plenty of resources at your disposal than a free plugin using your own resources may be faster.
